What is the relationship between Knights Out and West Point? Are you part of the Association of Graduates aka AOG?

Knights Out maintains a close relationship with West Point and the Association of Graduates, but we are an independent non-profit. As an independent organization we are able to support open and dignified service for LGBTQ+ Servicemembers regardless of administration policies.

My child is considering applying to West Point - is it safe for LGBTQ+ people at the academy? What resources are available?

Short answer - it depends.

As of February 12th, 2025, the Department of Defense has published policy that makes it nearly impossible for openly trans persons to apply to and be accepted by a service academy or any branch of the armed forces. It is an incredibly difficult time to be a trans person in the United States.

For persons that identify as cis gender and LGBQ+, the academy has an affinity club called Spectrum that provides a welcoming environment for cadets to meet other LGBQ+ cadets, allies, and academy faculty. The West Point garrison is home to several faculty members that graciously open their homes as sponsors to LGBQ+ cadets. For cadets that are not openly trans, Spectrum and these faculty members are incredibly supportive and will do their best to support in a difficult situation.

Knights Out works to provide support, resources, and funding to Spectrum to conduct meetings, attend events/conferences, and execute the club’s daily functions. Knights Out is also available to connect cadets with alumni resources and share insights with friends and family based on our experience as LGBT+ at West Point and in the Army.

Is Knights Out Partisan?

No. Knights Out maintains a non-partisan political stance. Members of our community span the political spectrum and we strive to engage constructively with stakeholders across political ideologies. We believe in open, dignified service for LGBTQ+ Servicemembers and we will advocate accordingly regardless of partisan politics.
